The Nutcracker is one of the Ballets that Tchaikovsky composed (there were 3, officially). It opened on December 18, 1892, at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, capital of Russia. It is based on the version of Alexandre Dumas, father of a children's story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the King of Mice / Rats. Due to its theme, it is traditionally staged at Christmas time.
